In a time of global conflict, the quest for peace in 2022 is stronger than ever. That is one of the primary motivations behind a first-ever partnership between the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band and the Northern California Peace Corps Association. This collaboration will take the form of a concert called “Notes from the Peace Corps” and will highlight the Peace Corps mission and experience, and regions of the world where they have made a difference.

Date: Saturday, March 19
Time: 3pm PDT
Place: Knuth Music Hall, in the Creative Arts Building at San Francisco State University
19th Avenue at Holloway, San Francisco
Tickets: Reserve FREE tickets at https://www.norcalpca.org/events/notes-from-the-peace-corps

To honor the mission of the Peace Corps, the “Official Band of San Francisco” will be led by Artistic Director Pete Nowlen. Said Nowlen “Bringing attention to the work of the Northern California Peace Corps Association through music is a privilege in this time when supporting peace is so vital. Sharing musical selections reflecting the cultures of areas the Peace Corps has impacted while linking them with stories from Peace Corps volunteers from those areas promises to create a fascinating event.”

The President of the Band, Brandon Moss, echoed Pete Nowlen’s comments: “The San Francisco/Lesbian Gay Freedom Band is honored to join the with the Northern California Peace Corps Association to highlight the important mission of the Peace Corps across the globe. Originally scheduled for March 2020, we are excited to finally have the opportunity to feature dynamic music from around the world in support of the continuing mission of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers from across Northern California.”

Featured musical selections by composers from countries where the Peace Corps has served include:

  • In the Steppes of Central Asia, by Borodin
  • Lesotho Variations, by Carr
  • Persian Dance No. 2, by Molookpour
  • Danza Final (Malambo), by Ginastera
  • Hands Across The Sea, by Sousa
  • Peruvian Fanfare No. 1, by Gervasoni
  • Canton Folk Song Suite, arranged by Loh
  • and more!

Through music, Northern California Peace Corps Association and the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band are working hand-in-hand to promote a better understanding of cultures across the globe. In 2022, it’s clear that the need for the healing power of global music is greater than ever.
